Nigeria and Britain Sign Landmark Deal on Migration, Security, and Business Travel

Nigeria, UK Seal Major Migration and Border Security Agreements

Nigeria and the United Kingdom have signed a series of major bilateral agreements aimed at strengthening cooperation on migration management, border security, and business travel between both countries. The deals were concluded during high-level engagements in the UK involving Nigerian and British officials as part of ongoing diplomatic and economic discussions between the two nations.

The agreements include a Memorandum of Understanding on Migration Partnership, a separate Statement of Intent focused on organised immigration crime and border security cooperation, as well as another agreement designed to expand business visa access for UK companies operating in Nigeria. Nigerian Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, signed the agreements while representing the Federal Government during official meetings in the United Kingdom.

According to the Nigerian government, the new arrangements are expected to improve migration governance, tackle immigration-related crimes, and support legitimate movement between both countries. Officials said the partnership is intended to create a safer and more transparent migration system while discouraging abuse of legal migration pathways and irregular migration activities.

Speaking after the signing ceremony, Tunji-Ojo said the partnership reflects the shared commitment of Nigeria and the UK to establishing a migration framework that benefits both countries. He explained that the agreements would not only strengthen border management but also encourage lawful mobility and international cooperation on security matters.

The minister also highlighted the economic aspect of the agreements, particularly the expansion of business visas for British companies operating in Nigeria. He noted that easier business mobility would help attract investments, improve trade relations, and support Nigeria’s broader economic ambitions, including the federal government’s drive toward building a trillion-dollar economy.

On the British side, UK Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood described Nigeria as an important strategic partner for the United Kingdom. She stated that the agreements demonstrate a shared vision between both governments on migration control, economic cooperation, and border security. Mahmood added that Nigeria became the first country to secure such a broad and comprehensive migration arrangement with the UK.

UK Trade Envoy to Nigeria, Florence Eshalomi, also welcomed the agreement on business visa expansion, saying it would strengthen economic cooperation and create more opportunities for investors and businesses operating across both markets.

Reports indicate that both countries also agreed to increase collaboration against organised immigration crime, fraud, and cross-border criminal networks. The partnership is expected to involve intelligence sharing and joint efforts between law enforcement agencies in Nigeria and the UK.

The agreements mark another significant step in the long-standing diplomatic and economic relationship between Nigeria and United Kingdom, with both governments expressing optimism that the partnership will deliver long-term benefits in security, migration management, and economic development.
